Joe Coulombe

Joe Coulombe was the founder of Trader Joe's, a unique grocery chain known for its distinctive products and loyal customer base.

Born in 1930, Coulombe graduated from Stanford University before entering the retail industry.

He opened the first Trader Joe's store in Pasadena, California, in 1967, targeting educated but underpaid consumers with affordable, high-quality products.

Coulombe sold the company to German grocery retailer Aldi in 1979 but continued as CEO until 1988.

After leaving Trader Joe's, he worked as a consultant and served on various corporate boards.

Coulombe was known for his innovative business strategies, literary interests, and unconventional approach to retail.

He passed away in 2020 at the age of 89.
